Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Wastewater Treatment Plant is responsible for treating domestic and industrial wastewater to a quality that is safe for discharge back into the St. Mary's River. Through a combination of mechanical and biological treatment processes, the facility protects public health and the surrounding environment.

The system includes a network of sewage lift stations that transport wastewater from homes and businesses to the treatment facility. Each year, the plant treats more than 900 million gallons of wastewater.

Located in Sault Ste. Marie at 1171 East Portage Avenue, the plant is licensed by the State of Michigan as a Class B treatment facility, designed to serve a population between 10,000 and 50,000 residents. The plant has a design capacity of 8.0 million gallons per day (MGD) and an average daily flow of approximately 2.0 MGD.

The facility provides both primary and secondary treatment, with Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs) serving as the primary method of pollutant removal.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant is staffed by five full-time operators who perform daily operational, maintenance, monitoring, and compliance tasks to ensure wastewater is properly treated and safely returned to the environment.
