About Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Sault Ste. Marie is the only city and county seat of Chippewa County, located in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. With a population of 13,337 (2020 Census), it is the second-most populated city in the U.P., after Marquette.

As the central hub of the Sault Ste. Marie, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area, the city plays a key role in the region, which encompasses all of Chippewa County.

Founded in 1668, Sault Ste. Marie holds the distinction of being Michigan’s oldest city—and one of the oldest cities in the entire United States. With centuries of rich history, the city is a blend of historic charm and modern progress.


A Unique Border Community

Situated at the northeastern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste. Marie is divided from its sister city—Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario—by the St. Marys River. The two communities are linked by the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, which also serves as the northern terminus of Interstate 75.
