Title:  WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) OPERATOR

Wage Class:  Non-Exempt, Hourly                     

Pay Rate:  Per Department of Public Works Labor Agreement

There is a job opening at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for a MI Class D Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. This position is under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, or in his absence the Group Leader “A”. 

Successful applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent, current State of Michigan Class D Municipal Wastewater Certification preferred or ability to obtain within two years of hire.

Successful applicant must have or obtain a CDL license within 6 months of employment.

Typical Duties for Wastewater Treatment Operator Include:

  • Performs inspection and perform preventive maintenance and repair of the WWTP components.
  • Performs inspection and perform preventive maintenance and repair of all lift stations.
  • Perform laboratory analysis of sludge, raw, primary, and final wastewater effluents and any other requirements per the City’s NPDES permit.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals, maintenance materials, and spare parts.
  • Cleans the laboratory and treatment plant.
  • Operates the WWTP’s various equipment as needed to treat the raw sewage entering the plant into final effluent that meets or exceeds all EGLE requirements and the associated process of the sludge digesting, pressing, and delivery to the landfill.
  • Assists in writing specifications for new and replacement equipment.
  • Performs plumbing and pipe fitting using various types and grades of material according to the use to which it will be put.
  • Assists in installing and setting up new equipment.
  • Maintains and cleans work area.
  • Cleans valves and lines when become plugged to expedite the flow of sewage.
  • Operates WWTP equipment by doing such things as emptying or filling tanks, changing direction or amount of flow, changing amounts of chemical to be added and making other adjustments.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as greasing, oiling, packing, and performing other repairs and adjustments on motors, pumps and other electrical and mechanical WWTP equipment and machinery.
  • Assists in maintaining the WWTP equipment in preventive and emergency conditions. 
  • Cleans rags and other debris from bar screens.
  • Cleans valves and lines as needed to maintain the flow of sewage.
  • Participate in the Asset Management Program
  • Participate in the Safety Program
  • Covers on-call duties on a rotating predetermined schedule.
  • Works weekends and holidays.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by WWTP Superintendent, Public Services Director, Water Director, Deputy City Manager, or City Manager.

Physical requirements of this position include the ability to lift and carry heavy items in excess of 70 lbs. Successful applicant must enter sub-surface tanks via ladders to clean and maintain the equipment located in them.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant normally operates from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily.  However, changes in demand and emergency procedures may require the change of current operating hours.  Work schedules are available upon request.
