The City of Sault Ste. Marie is accepting applications for a MECHANIC within the Department of Public Works (DPW). The DPW supports a wide range of essential City services, including Parks and Recreation, Streets, Water and Sewer, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the Water Treatment Plant.
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred; however, candidates must have the ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months of employment.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the supervision of the Public Service Director and/or Group Leader, works as a mechanic repairing or replacing parts and making mechanical adjustments on a wide range of motors and mechanical and hydraulic equipment, which includes welding, wiring, motor and transmission overhaul, and installation of special equipment to maintain all the equipment used by the City.
ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The mechanics position is generally within the maintenance shop and mechanic duties will often encounter adverse conditions where strenuous effort is required, and the following physical requirements must be met.

Mobility: Able to walk extended distances and climb ladders or steps to access equipment and facilities.

Agility: Able to lift, push or pull objects, weighing upwards of 80 pounds, and to operate equipment.

Vision: Able to read and comprehend instructions, directions and other documents.

Hearing/Speech: Able to converse orally with telephone or radio, and to receive and communicate information to employees and the public.

Other: Able to tolerate, be exposed to and work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
TYPICAL DUTIES:

Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces:
-
Engines ranging from small engines to large diesels.
-
Major power train components such as transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, clutches, and drive shafts.
-
Major hydraulic components on large shovels and graders such as hydraulic cylinders, valves, and pumps.
-
Steering components such as power steering, tie rods, steering gear boxes, draw links, and idler arms.
-
Brake shoes, hydraulic cylinders, air brake chambers, and valves.
-
Changes tires.
-
Carburetor, alternators, starters, distributors, generators, and solenoids.
-

Lubricates equipment on a regular basis and assures that preventive maintenance schedule is adhered to.

May wash trucks, cars, and equipment.
-
Installs all new equipment items such as snowplow frames and sanders, underbody scrapers, wiring including lights, and hydraulic systems.

Diagnose actual cause of malfunctions, mechanical and electrical.

Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance work.
-
Must have basic knowledge of scan tools and laptops.

Makes service calls in the field and returns vehicle to garage for repair or otherwise assists with equipment needing help.

Use welding and brazing equipment to fabricate new or repair old equipment such as snowplows, graders, and paint trucks. Occasionally perform bodywork with sheet metal, doors, windows, cabs, and other metal parts.

Maintains and repairs building-related equipment as needed.
-
Fill out time sheets and work orders to keep records of time spent on each job assignment.

Obtains approval of management concerning replacement of major or expensive parts and performance of any major operations.

Makes repairs and performs routine preventive maintenance on DPW facilities components as needed.

May attend training sessions either in-house or at special facilities away from main garage.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Must have state certificate for Mechanic License - Gas & Diesel within 14 months.

Assists in writing equipment specifications.

Participates in DPW’s Asset Management Plan for the City’s rolling stock.
