Mission Statement:

The mission of the City of Sault Ste. Marie is to provide a sustainable small urban environment in an international setting for the well-being of its citizens by planning for and managing its physical development in an environmentally friendly manner, by fostering an economy to support its public and private infrastructure and nurturing historical, cultural, and recreational activities that enhance the quality of life within it.

General Purpose: The docent will work as a guide, conducting visitors through the Sault Historic Structures. The individual should be knowledgeable and able to deliver a commentary on the exhibits while answering questions about the Historic Structures and local history of Sault Ste. Marie.

Supervision Received:

Work is performed under the general direction of the Parks and Recreation Department along with the Chippewa County Historical Society.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Job Duties:

  • Act as an ambassador on behalf of the City of Sault Ste. Marie engages in positive interaction with tourists daily, always in a courteous manner.
  • Cash Handling.
  • Light Cleaning.
  • Report necessary maintenance projects to the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Ability To:

  • Individuals should be able to deliver a commentary on exhibits while answering questions about the Historic Structures and local history of Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Show an interest in local history and a willingness to learn, if not already knowledgeable.
  • Docent training will be provided.
  • Work as a member of a team or independently, as your duties provide.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and visitors.
  • Interact with the public in a helpful, courteous, and tactful manner.
  • Attend work as scheduled and/or required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing and walking.

Hours of Operation:

  • There is flexibility in scheduled hours depending on need. 1-2 days a week is expected. Some weekends are possible.
