Organizational Summary:
The City of Sault Sainte Marie, established in 1668, is a municipal governmental structure, serving a population of 13,631. We are a public entity funded primarily by City taxpayer dollars and user fees, working with and for the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
Mission:
Maintain and expand the operation of Sanderson Field above the FAA, MDOT, and City standards for providing a safe and efficient airport serving the Sault community, state, and aviation public.
General Purpose:
The Airport Manager performs a wide range of tasks related to the daily operations and supervision of variable staff. This position manages the airport resources, coordinates contracted work, enforcing airport rules and regulations. The position operates a variety of motorized and non-motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner and is responsible for protecting and preserving the assets of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, its citizens, and customers.
Supervision Received:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Manager or their designee (currently EDC Executive Director).
Supervision Exercised:
Responsible for supervising and managing the personnel and activities, occasionally performs the skilled work and manual labor on projects.
Highlighted Requirements:
The prospective airport manager will be a responsible individual with aviation passion; able to multitask, redirect, and adapt to the evolving environment that is ever-present in aviation and Upper Peninsula life. The manager will be able to obtain, hold, and expand the MDOT airport manager certification, as well as all DOT/City/State drug compliance programs. Experience with basic mechanical tasks, troubleshooting, and maintenance, as well as property maintenance basics for ongoing property/plant support.
RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Daily Tasks
- Fuel testing and level monitoring; pump/truck monitoring
- Daily runway/Taxi inspections and condition monitoring
- Equipment condition monitoring, and PM upkeep/notification to the City
- Activity reporting/recording (flights, fuel, etc.)
- Publish NOTAMs or other aerodrome advisories
- Coordinate transient aircraft services - cars/hotels/food
- Verify the security of the Airport, fencing, camera systems, etc.
- Maintain property if not outsourced - Mowing, plowing, etc.
- Manage all airport operations from daily tasks through monthly reports and annual growth initiatives
- Publish NOTAMs, or other notifications as necessary
- Coordinate property and plant issues with the City as needed - proactively
- Coordinate daily staffing, services of aircraft, and airport offerings
- Staff scheduling
- Maintain staffing/drug compliance, etc.
- Adheres to recurrent training manual(s); develop as needed
- Collaboration with Flight school, EAA Flying club/events/City operations
- Coordinate with local hospital(s), Gov. Aviation, like CBP, USCG, etc.
- Monthly Reports to City/AAB/EDC

- Operational costs; Maintenance expenditures/events
- Obtain or pursue ongoing education/training for MDOT/FAA compliance
- Promote Airport operations locally and on any possible social platforms
- Adhere to City policies and standards for postings
- Event management or coordination for various options from EAA meetings, to flying events and fly-ins, CYAM/CAA alliance
- Enforce the bylaws of airport tenancy requirements
- Hangar and fuel sale promotion and growth initiatives
- Assists the city with the Capital Improvement Plan
- Available to attend commission meeting representing the airport’s interests and lobby for support
- Ensures storage, use, and acquisition of hazardous materials are under state and federal regulations

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and Skills -
- The position requires compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations Parts 77, 139, and applicable Advisory Circulars as they pertain to airport operations, maintenance, construction, aircraft maintenance and repair, and flight schools. Familiarity with MDOT Aero regulations and policies in the same areas is also expected.
- The candidate must possess demonstrated skills in written and verbal communication. Included in this is the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical publications, financial reports, and legal documents, collect and collate data, and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Education and Experience -
- High school completion or GED. Post-secondary education preferred. Supervisory experience is required, to include training, monitoring, and counseling employees.
Licenses and Certificates -
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License upon hiring and obtain MDOT Aero certification as an Airport Manager within 90 days of hire. FAA certification as a pilot, aircraft maintenance engineer, or authorized maintenance inspector is highly desired.

Must be able to read, write, plan, analyze, organize, reason, supervise, comprehend, evaluate, organize, effectively communicate, and handle the mental stress associated with the demands of the position.
