Fire Department Personnel

The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department operates with 19 fire fighting personnel, 1 Chief and a Secretary. The personnel work three 24 hour shift with a full day off in between, and four full days off after the third worked shift.



Chief Scott LaBonte


Chief LaBonte is an LSSU Fire Science Graduate and has been with the fire department since 2000; he was promoted to Lieutenant in 2012 and then appointed to the position of Fire Chief in 2017. Chief LaBonte is active with many local boards and committees and is proud to have a strong working relationship with many City, County, State, and Federal stakeholders striving to keep our community safe.

He and his wife Jennifer live in Sault Ste. Marie with their three daughters Madison, Hallie, and Avery and are proud to call it home.


Chief LaBonte can be reached at:



1.) Hold a current Paramedic License from the State of Michigan Dept. of Public Health and/or National Registry Certificate.


2.) Hold a current Michigan Firefighters Training Council Certification as a State Certified Firefighter – Level I & II.


3.) Hazardous material training – Awareness Level & Operations Level.

4.) Possess a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator or CDL license.
